More than $130 000 will be spent to train and up-skill 20 aged and community care workers in Gorton, Federal Member for Gorton Brendan O’Connor announced today.
The announcement is part of a $43.8 million education and training package designed to provide training to more than 8000 aged and community care personal care workers.
Mr O’Connor said the measure is a practical and commonsense one that is about helping workers in the sector to gain additional skills and build a long-term and satisfying career in aged care.
“Improving the skills of staff will allow them to provide the best possible care for older people in our local community,” he said.
“The Rudd Government is committed to making sure that older Australians receive high quality care when they need it, whether they choose to remain at home or enter residential care.
“We recognise that a skilled and committed aged care workforce is a very important component in providing that high quality care.”
This education and training package brings the Rudd Government's investment in training to more than $127 million for more than 21,300 aged care workers.
The programs in the education and training package are:
· Community Aged Care Workforce Development - which will equip more than 3000 personal care workers with the skills and knowledge for home-based care of frail aged people with complex care needs; and
· Better Skills for Better Care - which will support more than 5000 personal care workers in aged care homes to gain certificate-level qualifications - such as enrolled nursing.
Providing training for aged care workers is part of the Rudd Government’s continuing investment in the aged care sector, building an aged care system for the 21st century that meets the challenges of our ageing population.
