Local Suburbs Play Key Role In Biggest First Home Boom For 7 Years Print E-mail

Local suburbs including Caroline Springs, Cairnlea, Derrimut and Taylors Hill have played a key role in Victoria’s biggest first home buyer boom for seven years.

Federal Member for Gorton Brendan O’Connor said the large growth in first home buyers in our local area is due to jointly funded assistance from the Rudd and Brumby Labor Governments.

“Government efforts to help young families into their first homes and to create jobs in housing construction have worked, with over 4450 Victorians applying for first home owner assistance in the past month,” Mr O’Connor said.

“In our local suburbs, more than 300 applications for the first home owner grants were made in April alone.

“Each of these new homes means more jobs for local electricians, builders, plumbers and other tradespeople, which not only provides employment locally, but also helps us fight the global recession.”

Under the Rudd Government’s First Home Owners Boost, first home buyers who purchase an existing home could be eligible for $14 000, while those purchasing a new home could be eligible for $21 000.

Mr O’Connor said the Rudd Government extended the additional First Home Owners Boost for six more months in the recent Federal Budget and would phase it out gradually from the beginning of October to allow the market to re-adjust gradually.

The Brumby Government has also extended the Victorian First Home Owner Scheme with the new Victorian package aimed at helping Victorian families into their own homes sooner by offering $22 500 to first home buyers purchasing a new home in regional Victoria, $18 000 for a new home in metropolitan Melbourne and $9000 for an existing home as of 1 July this year.
