Brendan O'Connor, Member for Gorton, today welcomed the new Australian Citizens in his electorate as a record number of people became citizens across the country.
"This is the largest number of people to ever become citizens during Australia Day celebrations," Mr O'Connor said. "Today in Gorton, and right across the country, we are welcoming new Australians and celebrating our diversity."Mr O'Connor said Australian citizenship ceremonies provide the newest members of our nation with an opportunity to make a formal commitment to this country and to celebrate what it means to be an Australian citizen. "Australia Day is an opportunity for all of us to take pride in our citizenship and reflect on the meaning and importance of being Australian," Mr O'Connor said. "Becoming an Australian citizen is an exciting step that shows commitment and loyalty to Australia and to our local community."
"Our local area has been enriched by the cultures of people from more than 200 countries who have chosen to call Australia home. I am certain our new citizens will continue this tradition. "I hope everyone in Gorton finds their own unique way to celebrate what it means to be Australian and has a fantastic Australia Day." |
