Since being elected to Parliament in 2001, Brendan O'Connor has successfully campaigned for a number of local projects, including;
- Deer Park Bypass (opened 2009)
- Kings Road/Calder Highway interchange (to be opened mid-2012)
- Local Medicare Office (to be co-located with Centrelink at Watergardens by 2014)
Since the election of the Labor Government in 2007 over $110 million has been invested in infrastructure for education and training in the electorate of Gorton alone. This compares to about $10 million in total invested during the entire 11 years of the Howard Government.
Highlights of Labor's local investments include;
- $6 million for the Trade Training Centre at CRC Sydenham
- $2 million for the establishment of Industry Skill Centre in Derrimut
- Over $50 miilion between 21 primary schools for new gyms, libraries and class rooms.
The Labor Government has also invested heavily in many community facilities by contributing record amounts to local government funding. Local projects partly funded by the Federal Government in the last 3 years, include;
- $3 million for the construction of the Brimbank Gardens Community Hub in Derrimut
- $670000 for the development of Castley Reserve, Sunshine West
- $213000 for the upgrade of Caroline Springs Town Centre
